Sword of Damocles
Larry Cook
I'm sorry I gave the solution
To a problem that never was supposed to be solved
And I'm sorry I gave you the answer
To a question that never arose
Well it's true that you carry the burden
The pain and the agony
Of a tormented soul
And it's true that I pointed directions
To what seemed such an obvious goal
We left the story unfinished
Like a joke with no punch line
But you can't reason with love I suppose
And you weren't looking for love
As you wallowed in sadness
You counted the thorns of my rose
And I had no plans to elaborate
Taking love for a four letter word
There is no past we could want to commemorate
It just hangs in the air
Like Damocles' sword
Oh just to know you
I can hardly believe I'm alive
Oh just to love you
I been wined and dined in an out of paradise
Well I'm sorry I tried to persuade you
When I knew that my own heart was in it no more
And I'm sorry I came to the rescue
Like a savior just trying to score
But then the night was enchanting
And the moon was romantic
We had wine we had whisky galore
And then my tongue it got twisted
And my two feet insisted
On making a sway for the door
And I had no plans to elaborate
Taking love for a four letter word
There is no past we could want to commemorate
It just hangs in the air like Damocles' sword
