Merry as We Went
Larry Cook
Merry as we went over the borders
My soulful friends and I
Our business in disorder
But our dreams could kiss the sky
I played a silver fiddle
As Jamie banged the drums
Little Casper in the middle
He was old enough to hum
And it was goodbye till the rendezvous
And good to have seen you dears
Fare ye well next time chez nous
And I'll see you around next year
Merry as we went over the ashes
Of friendships gone untold
Jamie held our cashes
And I had her to hold
Little Casper strolled behind us
Still humming for a song
We waited round the corner
But we never saw him come
And it was goodbye till the rendezvous
And good to have seen you dears
Fare ye well next time chez nous
And I'll see you around next year
So I went back around the corner
There was a car ditched in the mud
Little Casper he'd been struck down
His face a pool of blood
Merry as we went over the ashes
Of friendships gone untold
Jamie held our cashes
And I had her to hold
Now it's been a long time since I seen Jamie
My fiddle's on the shelf
The guilt that I am feeling
Well there ain't no tongue can tell
And it was goodbye till the rendezvous
And good to have seen you dears
Fare ye well next time chez nous
And I'll see you around next year
