I Wonder Why It Hurts Me So
Larry Cook
Last night she said that she loved me
So I said that too
Then she laughed to my face 'n said she knew I did
So I said I meant you
The true depth of misunderstanding never got clear
I was calling her off in the distance and next to me
She says honey I'm here
Now it's four in the morning and I'm dreading the day
I'll be walking the tight rope again
With two feet of clay
Now she's gone
And for all I know
I wonder why it hurts me so
I sang her to my bed
Low life shimmering love stained sheets
She invaded my darkness
Like a wolverine in heat
I was hunting for good times
I was chased by the blues
She was everything I'd hoped and I'd longed for
To find and to lose
It's like ships passing on an ocean wide
Strangers in a dark and very lonely night
And now she's gone
Her touch on my skin still glows
I wonder why it hurts me so
Don't wanna get too sentimental
It never was my style
But once the tears start falling
Well they fall a while
They fall a while
Guess I was trying for a fast love when
I had me a midstream pony money well spent
But now she's gone
Her touch on my skin still glows
I wonder why it hurts me so
Was she godsend from heaven
I'm afraid I can't tell
The coin never dropped
The curtain just fell
Was she the angel of mercy
Or the angel of sin
Bet she's painting my picture in blood and sand
There's a little girl within
I'm not so sure what to believe
You took like a lover
Then you gave like a thief
And now you're gone
Maybe I'm better of I don't know
But I wonder why it hurts me so
