I Gave My Heart to a Sailor
A F Harrold
Er, this is a song I wrote when I was a much, um, younger girl than I am now
So I, I, can't re- re- re- reach um hehh
It's like working with Max Headroom as well, this
I can't reach all the er, the high notes in it but we'll give it a try anyway
It's a warning, erm, for you all
I gave my heart to a sailor who
I met on the shore of the sea
He held my hand and spoke soft words
And gazed so tenderly
He walked me back to my boarding house
And I was as quiet as a very little mouse
For shy was I as we kissed goodnight
But he was as shy as me
We met the next day by the pedalo pond
And then we went to the zoo
We shared ice creams upon the prom
Then our beach towels we did strew
Our sandwiches were filled with sand
I almost wept as he took my hand
And gazed in my eyes and stroked my hair
And said darling I love you
At teatime I nibbled just the corner of a cake
And I sipped a very tiny cup
Mater noticed how I didn't touch the toast
And she asked if anything was up
Well to answer her I could not do
For she'd never had a sailor saying I love you
So I smiled to myself and I just kept mum
And I sipped another teensy sup
La da da dee-dee-dee da da
La-da dee diddle diddle diddle di
(*sniff*)
That evening we went out to a dance
And we had the most delightful twirl
Then he made me drink some fortified wine
Which sent my head a-whirl
When I awoke he had gone
And I found my dress had been undone
And it seems it's not so much a girl in every port
As some port in every girl
A-la la diddle diddle la dee da
La-la-la da dee dee dum
Now I'll never trust a man again
For they all seem the same to me
Whether they're borne on the land in the air
Or especially out at sea
There's only one thing upon their mind
And when it's been had they are be hard to find
But still there's a part in my foolish heart
That believes he really did love me
But still there's a part in my foolish heart
That believes he really did love me
